(1) The Flemish variant Adelisa could also be a combination of Adal and Lies (from Elisabeth) (Van der Schaar, 1992).
In the present survey, it has been considered a variant of Adal-heid.
(2) Sarre could also be a variant of the biblical name Sarah. (3) Sipper most probably is derived from a Germanic name with prototheme Sig, a rather popular element in North Holland. Other possiblities are the Hebrew Zippora, but that name did not appear in The Netherlands until the 19th century (Schoonheim, 2000), and the Germanic Sibbe, but I never found this element in Dutch names. (4) Soete was found once as a feminine name (in Dordrecht: "Soeten ver Trisen dochter"), and several times as a masculine byname (in Dordrecht: "Wouter Soeten", and in Oudenaarde: "Walterus dictus Soete filius domine Katerine", "Arnoud Soete Ywein ziin sone", "Wouter Soete Hoernekin"). (5) Pieterse looks masculine, but is really a woman's name ("Martijn voer Pietersen sone"; see also Schoonheim, 2001). |
